Rooted in the land. Guided by care.
I’m Russell, the owner and hands behind Carbon Estate Stewardship in the Comox Valley. For over 20 years, I’ve worked professionally in landscaping and horticulture. My connection to gardens began much earlier—with my hands in warm, damp soil, planting annuals beside my mother before I could walk. I’m licensed and insured.

A lifetime of growing
I grew up on a twelve-acre farm in Metchosin, surrounded by hills, valleys, forests and creeks. Walking the gardens and learning the nature of plants was part of everyday life. My grandparents farmed canola, potatoes and grain in Alberta, while gardening ran through the English side of my family, too. Caring for growing things has always felt natural to me.
In my twenties, I moved to Toronto to pursue landscape design studies through a program at Ryerson University. Today, I’m completing Level 3 horticultural training as I work toward my Red Seal. That continuing education sits alongside years of practical experience and a curiosity that has never left me.
Whatever my home or profession, I have always gardened. I still garden in my free time, and a nursery or hardware store is one of my favourite places to spend an afternoon. This work is both my profession and a lasting source of pleasure.
Working with a living canvas
My style begins with the natural architecture of a place: its light, slope, soil and existing plants. I favour gardens with flow—spaces that draw the eye onward, invite you to explore, and reward a closer look. The whole composition matters, but so do the small details you discover along the way.
A garden is a living canvas. From day to day and season to season, its tapestry changes and reveals something new. I see my role as a translator: understanding what the landscape offers and bringing it into conversation with the way you want to live.
That means balancing your wishes with the realities of the site, your budget and the care the garden will need. A beautiful design should also be one you can afford to maintain, with the structure and growing conditions to flourish for years.
Responsibility, from the first conversation
Attention to detail, transparency, communication and grit guide my work. I stay closely involved because the details of what we agree matter. You work directly with me, and I check in as a project develops, raise concerns early and discuss changes before moving beyond the agreed scope. Respecting your budget is part of respecting your trust.
To me, stewardship means accepting responsibility for the land in our care. A garden is an extension of how we live and what we value. Caring for it deserves the same intention we bring to caring for ourselves and our homes.
In a world of concrete, deadlines and constant demands, a garden can offer a pause—a sense of wonder, a moment of curiosity, a way back to yourself and the earth. Helping create that experience is both a passion and an honour.
